World-building Pt. 2
Five questions to run before you call it a world.
Part 1 clearly resonated, because my TikTok comments had so many people “doing this” or naming brands I hadn’t mentioned: from wedding planning, to jewelry, to Pilates studios (hi). And I love that energy but I want to be honest with you about something: a select, SELECT few of you are actually building a world. Most of you have good branding. Good branding is a great thing! But they aren’t the same thing, and the gap between them is what we’re getting into today.
Here’s the excuse I hear most: “I’d love to do that, I just don’t have the budget.” I get why it feels true: world-building looks expensive from the outside, all mood and atmosphere and custom everything. But I refuse to believe that budget is any real barrier. It’s in imagination, asking for trades and brainstorming with your creative friends, being willing to think sideways instead of just paying someone to think for you. The brands doing this well aren’t outspending everyone, they’re just making better decisions, more often, in places nobody’s grading them on.
Which is really the whole of it! World-building isn’t one big swing, a campaign, a rebrand, a viral video, it’s a hundred small decisions that nobody’s tracking, made consistently, in the same direction. The font on your receipt, the way your website moves, the way you skip a viral TikTok trend and instead come up with a concept that ties back to your why.
So instead of giving you a checklist to feel good about, I want to give you the questions I actually ask myself. Sit with these before you decide you’ve already got this handled.
